Getting Started
Start using ZPL Viewr and understand its role in a label workflow.
ZPL Viewr is an online tool designed to help users visualize supported Zebra Programming Language label code. It converts compatible printer instructions into an on-screen representation of the intended label, making it useful when reviewing positioning, text, barcodes, and general layout during development and testing. A preview is a practical inspection aid, but it is not a replacement for validating important labels on the intended printer and media.
Visit the ZPL Viewr homepage, then enter or paste supported ZPL instructions into the existing viewer. Use the viewer's available preview action to render the label, and inspect the result for layout, positioning, text, and barcode issues. If something does not look right, adjust the ZPL code and preview it again. The exact controls shown on the homepage reflect the current viewer implementation.
No physical printer is required to create an online visual preview. This makes the viewer useful for early layout review and development work. Actual printed output can still differ because of printer resolution, firmware, installed fonts, calibration, media dimensions, darkness settings, and other hardware-specific behavior. Test production labels with the target printer, media, and scanner before relying on them operationally.
Beginners who understand a few basic ZPL instructions can use visual previews to see how code relates to a label layout. Starting with a small format containing ^XA, a text field, and ^XZ can make experimentation easier. ZPL Viewr should be treated as a preview tool rather than an advanced guided learning system, so Zebra documentation and practical printer testing may still be needed.
The website is designed to adapt to smaller screens, so it can be accessed from many phones and tablets. However, editing complex code and inspecting fine label details may be more comfortable on a laptop or desktop display. Browser behavior, screen size, input method, and device performance can affect the experience, so identical operation across every device and browser cannot be guaranteed.
ZPL Basics
Understand the language, label instructions, and common terminology.
ZPL stands for Zebra Programming Language. It is a printer command language used to describe label layouts and printing instructions for compatible label printers. Commands can define label dimensions, field positions, fonts, text, lines, boxes, barcodes, graphics, and other print behavior. A ZPL format is sent as text-based instructions, which the printer or a compatible renderer interprets to produce a label.
ZPL code is commonly used to create shipping labels, warehouse and inventory tags, product identification labels, barcode labels, asset labels, and other operational print formats. Software systems can generate ZPL dynamically using order, shipment, or product data. The code controls how those values appear on the label and can be sent to compatible printers as part of an automated labeling workflow.
^XA begins a ZPL label format, while ^XZ ends it. Commands for label content normally appear between them. A short illustrative example is:
^XA
^FO50,50
^A0N,30,30
^FDHello ZPL^FS
^XZ
This example positions a text field and prints “Hello ZPL.” A missing start or end command can prevent a renderer or printer from recognizing the format correctly.
ZPL and EPL are different label printer command languages. ZPL means Zebra Programming Language, while EPL means Eltron Programming Language. Their syntax, commands, and capabilities differ, even when a printer may support more than one language. Compatibility depends on the specific printer, firmware, and rendering software. Do not assume EPL code can be processed by a ZPL viewer unless EPL support is explicitly documented.
ZPL is a set of printer instructions that describes what to draw and how to print it. A rendered label image is a visual representation created by interpreting those instructions. The image is useful for human review, but it does not necessarily retain the printer commands or reproduce every hardware-specific behavior. The original ZPL remains the operational format sent to a compatible printer or system.
Features & Previewing
Learn what an online preview can show and where verification is needed.
Yes. Supported ZPL instructions can be submitted to the online viewer to create a visual label preview. This can help you inspect layout decisions before printing, especially while developing or reviewing generated code. Rendering engines do not always implement every ZPL command or reproduce printer behavior exactly, so important labels should also be tested on the intended printer and media.
A compatible renderer can visualize supported ZPL barcode commands. The exact symbologies, parameters, and command variations available depend on the rendering engine. A barcode that looks correct on screen is not automatically guaranteed to scan after printing. Validate critical barcodes using the production printer, intended label stock, correct DPI, and the scanning equipment used in the real workflow.
Label dimensions may be influenced by ZPL commands and by any dimension controls included in the current viewer. Because those controls depend on the active implementation, use the options displayed in the live tool rather than assuming a particular size selector exists. Also check width, length, print origin, resolution, and coordinate values in your ZPL when matching a preview to physical media.
Download availability depends on the features currently exposed by the live viewer. Check the viewer interface for any supported save or export action. No particular image or document format should be assumed unless it is shown there or documented on the Features page. If your workflow requires a specific output format, you can describe the requirement through the contact page.
Multiple-label behavior depends on how the current viewer and its rendering engine process formats containing more than one label. Do not assume that batch previewing, navigation between labels, or bulk processing is available unless the live interface confirms it. For reliable review, you may need to test each label format separately. Specialized multiple-label requirements can be discussed through the contact form.
Troubleshooting
Investigate blank previews, layout differences, and formatting problems.
A blank preview may be caused by missing ^XA or ^XZ commands, invalid syntax, unsupported instructions, content positioned beyond the label boundary, renderer limitations, or a temporary processing error. Start with a minimal valid label and confirm that it renders. Then add commands back gradually, checking field origins, dimensions, command delimiters, and data fields to identify the instruction causing the problem.
Differences can result from printer model, print resolution or DPI, installed fonts, firmware, label dimensions, calibration, media, and rendering-engine behavior. Coordinates measured for a 203-DPI printer, for example, may not map as expected on a different resolution. Confirm the target printer settings and label size, then compare unsupported or hardware-specific commands. Use the preview for inspection, followed by a physical print test for final validation.
Check the barcode command, orientation, module width, height, field data, check-digit requirements, and field termination. An unsupported symbology, invalid parameter, oversized barcode, incorrect data format, or position outside the label can affect the result. Rendering is only one part of validation: test operational barcodes on the real printer and media, then scan them with the devices used in production.
Review the field origin or positioning command, commonly ^FO, and compare its X and Y coordinates with the label width and length. Check the selected font, character height and width, rotation, line wrapping, and any field block settings. Long dynamic values may require more space than sample data. Adjust the coordinates or font dimensions, then preview again without assuming the viewer will correct overflow automatically.
First, test a minimal valid ZPL format and review your syntax. Refresh the page, confirm that your browser is current, and check your internet connection if remote processing is involved. The command may also be unsupported by the active renderer, or the service may be experiencing a temporary issue. If the problem continues, use the contact page and include sanitized example code, expected output, actual behavior, browser details, and reproduction steps.
